The problem
Someone’s husband, kid, or mother was just arrested. The family doesn’t know where they are, what first appearance means, or who to call. The person inside is about to make one recorded phone call with no idea what to say. Nobody explains any of it — the people who do, bail bond agents and jail phone vendors, are paid by the family’s confusion.
The founder
Javier Contreras is a Marine Corps veteran and a former Alachua County Sheriff’s Office booking deputy — Team 1, nights, the shift that books people into the jail. He built What Happens Now after watching the same handful of questions go unanswered on every shift, and because he has been on the other side of that same phone call himself, with his own family.
He serves as President of Project Jail Cell, Inc., unpaid. The organization runs one program so far: What Happens Now.
The lines we don’t cross
These are written down and enforced, not just intended. They are the credibility the whole project rests on.
- No money from bail bond agents, referral networks, or phone and commissary vendors, ever.
- Never collects names, case numbers, or the content of questions.
- Never discusses the facts of anyone’s case.
- Never shows a fact as verified until a human has actually confirmed it.
- Never sells anyone on “fewer calls” as a promised outcome.
